Drum brake system utilizes brake shoes – just like disc brakes utilize brake pads. When drum brakes are used in modern vehicles, they are used only on the rear axle – because drum brakes have less stopping power than disc brakes, so disc brakes are used on the front wheels. Many vehicles use disc brakes only.
