R-1234YF is a new refrigerant developed to replace the R-134a, which is unfriendly to the environment. R-1234YF was designed to protect environment, or at least to be more environmentally friendly. In addition, the new equipment necessary to use R-1234YF is also designed to limit environmental damage. Since the new refrigerant requires new, expensive, equipment, few independent repair shops offer R-1234YF service.
If you are not sure whether your vehicle requires the R-1234YF refrigerant, check owner’s manual. It can be listed under a number of similar sounding names: HFO1234YF, YF1234, R-1234-YF, HFO-1234-YF, YF-1234, HFO-1234, or R1234YF. They all refer to the new refrigerant.
